GEO: getting mentioned in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini

More and more customers no longer ask Google which businesses exist, but ask ChatGPT which one to choose. They do not get ten links, but an answer with two or three names. GEO is the work that puts your name among them, and makes sure what the AI says about you is correct.

What is GEO?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization: setting up your website and your mentions elsewhere so that AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot, and the AI overviews at the top of Google, know, understand and recommend your business.

An AI assistant draws its answer from two sources: what the model learned during training, and what it looks up online at the moment of the question. You can influence both, but not in the same way and not equally fast. What is online can end up in an answer within weeks. What a model has learned only changes with a next version.

Why AI mentions one business and not another

An AI assistant does not choose based on a single website. It looks for confirmation: do several sources name the same business for the same trade in the same place? Comparison sites, industry lists, business profiles, reviews and articles weigh heavily. If you are missing there, you barely exist to the AI, however good your own site is.

On top of that, your own site has to make clear in one go what you do, for whom and where. Pages that fully answer a question get cited; pages full of general promises do not. And the AI crawlers need access: allowed in robots.txt, with the content in the HTML rather than only after JavaScript has loaded.

Finally, the name itself. If your business shares its name with another, an AI easily mixes the two up. We know this from experience: Oddbird is also the name of a Swedish wine brand and an American web agency. Structured data and consistent mentions with place and trade attached solve that.

How we measure whether AI mentions you

An AI answer is slightly different every time, so a single question to ChatGPT says little. We ask the questions your customers ask, with your trade and your region in them, to several AI assistants at once. For each answer we record whether you are mentioned, in which position, who is mentioned instead of you and which sources the answer relies on.

For this we use Oddrank, our own tool for measuring visibility in AI. It puts those questions to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, with web search on where possible, because that is what a real customer gets. That way you see not only whether your visibility changes, but also why.

What we do

  • Baseline: whether AI assistants mention you for the questions your customers actually ask, and who they mention instead
  • Source analysis: which sites ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini draw their answers from in your industry
  • Technical readability: allowing AI crawlers, content in the HTML, structured data and llms.txt
  • Pages that fully answer one question: what you do, for whom, where and what it costs
  • Mentions beyond your own site: business profiles, comparison sites, industry lists and reviews
  • Monthly measurement of your mentions in AI answers, alongside your Google rankings

AI answers vary per question and per person. Nobody can promise a fixed spot in ChatGPT, and neither do we. That is why we measure across many questions and repetitions, and report what shifts.

How we approach it

  1. Measure

We put your customers' questions to several AI assistants and record who gets mentioned and why.

  2. Sources

We find out which sites the answers in your industry rely on, and where you are missing.

  3. Site

Your own site becomes readable and citable: clear pages, structured data and open to AI crawlers.

  4. Mentions

We make sure you appear where AI looks for confirmation, with the same name, place and description everywhere.

Result

Your business is in the answer when a customer asks AI for advice, with a description that is accurate.

What is the difference between GEO, AEO and LLMO?

Very little. They are three names for the same work: making sure AI assistants know and recommend your business. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the most widely used term; AEO (answer engine optimization) and LLMO (large language model optimization) put the emphasis slightly differently.

Do I still need SEO if I work on GEO?

Yes. AI assistants that search the web largely use the same indexes as Google and Bing. A site that ranks poorly there is also found less easily by AI. GEO builds on SEO; it does not replace it.

How soon will ChatGPT mention my business?

That depends on where the answer comes from. Assistants that search the web live, like Perplexity and ChatGPT with search on, can pick up new pages and mentions within a few weeks. What a model learned during training only changes with a new version. Expect months for a stable result, just as with SEO.

Can I check myself whether AI mentions my business?

To get a first impression, yes: ask ChatGPT or Perplexity which business they recommend for your service in your town. A single question says little though, because the answer varies. Our findability scan uses several questions at once and also shows who is mentioned instead of you.

Do you only work for businesses in The Hague?

No. Oddbird is based in The Hague and works for businesses across the Netherlands. The intro call is by video or phone, so where you are does not matter.
